We got the bus to Ko Chang from the station at half nine in the morning. We barely made it and as we arrived the people working at the station guessed we were off to Ko Chang (because we looked like backpackers, I guess) and packed us onto a bus. The bus was air conditioned and much more comfortable than anything you'd see in Ireland, we got snacks and drinks too.
When we arrived at the ferry we booked accommodation with some people there (DO NOT DO THIS!!! read on to see why) and arrived on the island looking forward to our Thai Hut paradise. The place was weird, we could tell that from the beginning, its got that feeling of going into and being trapped in you're weirdest friends' house, while their slightly strange (can't put your finger on why, but strange) parents insist that you stay for dinner. Every irrational part of you wants to run out screaming no!!!!, but you know that its too late to turn back.
The hut was cheap, I'll admit that much, it was 3.50 euros (euro key does not work here) per night each, but it was disgusting. I haven't got the highest standard of hygiene, I'm certainly no neat freak, but even I was on the verge of throwing up. The place was crawling with bugs: spiders, flies, mosquitoes, un-nameable creatures from the land of icky.
The toilet smelled really badly and the shower that they had advertised was a barrel of cold water.
We went outside and had a look around. The place had a bar, with nightly country music, it was about twenty minutes from the beach, it had a serious air of seediness about it that we couldn't quite place, but they offered us motor bike rental without the need for a license. As you may have guessed, we rented a bike.
The first night was really crappy, we wanted to go to sleep early because we were off scuba diving the next day, but we couldn't sleep because of the itchiness, the bugs and the overwhelmingly loud country music that came from our hotel.
Suffice to say we did not wake for scuba diving..
